Just continuing from the post below where I argue that in some respects there are conflicts between SEO and usability, I came to this post on A List Apart (an indispensible website about websites) via wikipedia, which gives some good examples of how making your site accessible can also make it more visible to search engines.

High Accessibility Is Effective Search Engine Optimization

The ALA post was made over a year ago, but it’s as relevant as it ever was.

One Response to “Accessibility as effective SEO (search engine optimisation optimization)”

It’s what I tell people who still complain about needing to make their content accessible.

“Not only is it the law, but people will stand a far greater chance of finding your content.” I’m like a stuck record on this.

It’s amazing the number of people who still put text in images so they can control what it looks like without providing an accessible alternative.

I’m just glad the folks at Google don’t encourage this behaviour by engineering their search engines to read it!

By the way, does that mean an accessible website is pure link bait? ;-)
