Nice article. I think 1024 x 768px is definitely the new standard for websites (for a while now). I still find that resolution can even be quite restrictive when trying to create graphic rich websites.

These days bandwidth and large screen monitors are cheap and plentiful. We need to push forward for the good of the web design industry. Those living in the stone ages will simply be left behind.

Let natural selection take its course I say. :-)

Very true. It takes a certain level of visual design skill to go straight to HTML and a very high level of front end skill, so that it's still quick and easy to jig things about. So pick the tools you are most comfortable with, whether that means working in CSS or MS Powerpoint...

Although not a prototype in the same way, I think all of these rules apply to non-functional (just HTML/CSS) mockups in web design. If you design in the browser instead of in Photoshop, you're basically making a prototype.

I bought the PDF, so it's always on hand! An HTML version would be even better, but I guess there's probably even more risk of piracy...

I agree this is a pretty good book. And it works well as an on-screen PDF.

I agree, this is a really powerful way of encouraging innovation. When I've worked on conceptual designs for apps, I always look forward to this stage in the process because it's where you suddenly start to produce all sorts of good and original ideas. And it usually surprises me. Of course you need to know all about the user's real-world contexts and processes first.

Another one that works well is the "magazine cover" treatment for the product or service.

It's interesting to see what people choose as the main cover story.
